Prepping Your Garden for Spring

With winter enjoying its last days of the season and spring waiting in the wings, it’s time to get into the garden and trim down and prep all the plants, trees, and soil so that your plants get that “haircut,” and your soil gets the fertilizer and nutrients it needs to help your shrubs, roses, and trees perform their best. I generally cut my roses and shrubs down about 1/3 to 1/2 their size. It seems drastic at first, but trust me, you will be rewarded soon enough with a garden full of colorful blooms and new, shiny growth. After trimming, give all your plants a good application of slow-release fertilizer and then a thorough top dressing of quality mulch for weed protection. Come April and May, your garden will be the picture of beauty!
