Copper in the Kitchen

My first impressions of copper in the kitchen and the beauty it exudes was revealed to me in my aunt and uncle’s French country kitchen back in the 1960s and 70s when I was a young boy. I remember the colorful array of miscellaneous pots and pans that hung over their brick enclosed range. There was a romantic warmth that these copper pots bestowed upon this room that has always captured my heart! I’ve continued my love of copper in my own home, and at Le Potager with a new display, “The Culinary Table.”

Copper and kitchen seem to go hand in hand, and in Europe, their timeless and romantic history go back hundreds of years with France and Italy producing some of the world’s best copper. Mauviel and Ruffoni are just a couple of well-known copper cookware makers.

If you like your copper shiny, try Barkeepers Friend; in my opinion, it’s an excellent cleaner. If you like a more aged patina look, then just let copper age naturally, and perform light cleanings every now and then.

Lastly, a fun fact. . .Le Potager’s French caramel is actually made in large antique 100 year-old copper kettles from Normandy, France.
